Can you start with some interesting facts about the real history of Thanksgiving? I am trying to figure that all out.
I look forward to it!

Thanksgiving was made a national holiday in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln. I found it ironic that he did this during the civil war. But his idea, I believe, was to show the oneness of the country. We all came here for different reasons to escape different problems. We are united in some aspects.

The key is understanding that the pilgrims were escaping religious persecution by the church of england. It was really one of the first splits in the reformation after Martin Luther. The pilgrims really had no idea what was in store. They had never had to "rough it" as they did in that new england backwoods. I think the tablecloth/martha stewart image we have of thanksgiving is really misguided. The natives did share and teach the pilgrims how to survive, but it did not take long for the tables to turn and the pilgrims to start pushing the natives out.
